What is Copper Slip"?
Steve, Thanks for the quick response, have forwarded the information to Stanley, we are all Ham Radio operators here and he is about 95 miles north of me . Also the Ham who originally found your website , Ron W9AEG in Illinois, recommends that you NOT put your banking information on the website for your own protection, we have much identity theft over here.
Stay well 73, Skip W2OZ
ps spoke to ZS6BPA Sokkie yesterday!
Hi Skip,
Re: 'Copper-Slip'
Detroit Diesel manuals say to lubricate these bolts with International Compound No 2, or equivalent. Basically Copper-Slip is a very good copper based lubricant, we use it for all sorts of things that you want to go on smoothly and be removed without getting stuck or stop-start-jerking, like cylinder head bolts, crankshaft pulleys etc. The stop-start-jerking properties of high torque bolts can give you false torques or even damaged threads if you don’t lubricate them. Some manufacturers even allow you to use engine oil for this purpose.
I will correct this ambiguity on the web, thanks for your input.
Kind Regards
Hi Steve,
Using the tightening specs from your site on a rebuild here in the USA NY state farm, haha. What is 'Copper-Slip' in the US don't understand, grease, nevercease, or copper flat washer?
Thanks,
Skip Behnke
ps I am asking for the machinist at the farm Stanley Progy, has no internet, my bag is electrical.

4-53 losing water and the reservoir is bubbling
Hi Avery,
If you're losing water and your reservoir is bubbling, you'll have to remove the head to see what' s going on.
It sounds like a cracked head, but if you're lucky it still can be a blown compression gasket.
In answer to your other questions:
Q: Any sites to help us further?
Sorry, the point of Barrington's Diesel Club is to begin to address this problem.
A workshop manual from your nearest DD agent, if they have one, is the best you can get.
If I knew where you're calling from I may be able to point you to some local help, but a .COM address is pretty universal & gives no clues.
Q: How do you check compression?
Essentially you use a dummy injector with a normal high pressure compression gauge.
Anyone who does DD engines should have one, but if you have your own diesel compression tester, you can buy a scrap injector somewhere & make the adaptor for it.
For this engine you normally test compression at idle, 600 rpm, so you must insert the dummy & bridge the fuel to the other injectors before you do it.
Q: What's the clicking-noise when trying to start?
Maybe the starter solenoid or some foreign material.
Kind Regards
Steve Barrington

thanks so much for your reply,
i am thinking more and more towards a head gasket since there r other characteristics of this problem.
the water reservoir is bubbling a lot and the motor is using up water although the oil is not contaminated at all.
i was thinking my problem began after i laid the boat up on a beach to clean the bottom and thought i had damaged the cooling tubes but the problem is too big for that now.
do u know any web sites that provide a good technical forum to help me become familiar with the workings of this engine. thanks for your help so far i really appreciate it,
Avery

Hi Avery,
Sounds like a loose injector or a blown compression gasket.
I doubt the blower has anything to do with it.
Check basics first:
- Oil is a mono-grade SAE 30 or SAE 40 - no fancy oils for this engine
- Oil full-level is 2 inches (50 mm) below the top of the sump - and stays at that level.
- If the oil level increases by itself , it indicates an internal leak from somewhere like:
- Some accessory e.g. a hydraulic pump
- Fuel dilution - bad injector
- or a water leak. If your oil is still black I doubt if it is water.
- Check there are no loose injectors or injector bolts.
- Make sure air from a compressor (if you have one) is not blowing into the engine.
- If all the above are OK, remove & test injectors, if OK
- Remove and test cylinder head, hopefully you can see a blown compression gasket & there are no cracks in the cylinder head.
Kind regards
Steve Barrington

if i could ask u a quick question.
i have a 453 two stroke in my fishing boat and i have not lost oil pressure but it is blowing oil out of the dip stick and the vent off the valve pan at an alarming rate.
could the oil be too thin?,it starts easily and runs fine but oil leaks is bad.
crankcase pressure is too high, could it be the blower?
it is not turbo charged and was rebuilt two years ago.
any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated,
thanks Avery

Detroit 4-71 Workshop manual for Panama
Hi Obando,
At present I can help with a used manual, you may have it for free, but you will need postage from South Africa, I estimate about US$ 20, the book is rather large.
If you want it you'll find banking details on our home page.
I suggest you try your local Detroit Diesel agent first; they may have stock at a price less than the postage from South Africa.
Kind Regards
Steve Barrington
